LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Metro Police Department opened the doors of its new headquarters Monday morning.
Chief Paul Humphrey, Mayor Craig Greenberg and officers and staff were on hand to celebrate the opening of the new headquarters in the former AT&T building on Chestnut Street.

LMPD's Honor Guard took part in a flag-raising ceremony in the pouring rain to officially open the building.
LMPD's previous three-story LMPD HQ building was located at 633 W. Jefferson St., built in 1955 and torn down in 2023. It included public spaces, offices, a gym and holding area.

The former LMPD headquarters building in downtown Louisville is being demolished on Aug. 15, 2023.
Its life expectancy was expected to be about 65 years, which it had exceeded.
The new building is nearly 200,000 square feet and sits on 5 acres. It was built in 1978, according to PVA records. It went up for sale in 2015 and was originally listed for $11.4 million then dropped to $10.2 million. Louisville Metro Government agreed to buy it for $6.8 million, according to previous WDRB reporting.
LMPD has been operating out of the Edison Building on West Ormsby Avenue until the new headquarters were ready.
The project has been nearly four years in the making. Humphrey called it a new chapter in the history of the department.
"This new headquarters is more than walls and windows. It's a symbol," Humphrey said. "... a symbol of stability, a symbol of trust and a symbol of our wavering commitment to the people of Louisville and our presence in this community."
Not all LMPD employees are moving in immediately. The chief said it will take up to another two years to get everyone in the building.
