LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville is one of a handful of cities to snag a prestigious award with its efforts to become greener and cleaner.

It beat out more than 200 other cities to earn the Outstanding Achievement City Livability Award. The U.S. Conference of Mayors recognized its work to encourage neighborhoods to become more sustainable.

Part of the mayor's plan includes recognizing households and neighborhoods doing their part.

"Could be simple things, riding bus to work, using reusable grocery bags over plastic -- all simple ways citizens can create every day to make it green living certified," Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said.

Mayors from similar sized cities chose the winner.
