LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- They are the men and women who swear to serve and protect Louisville's community and Saturday they received some well-deserved recognition.

The Louisville Fire Department hosted the 38th annual awards and retirement banquet at Slugger Field.

The event recognizes division personnel citizens for their extraordinary service, accomplishments and contributions.

"We've been a part of obviously serving the Louisville community for over 166 years and this is just kind of a way for us to cherish those moments," said Capt. Donovan Sims. "It was a big year for a lot of large scale emergencies that our training was on display for not only Louisville to see but honestly for the world to see and it was huge."

It was also a way to say thank you to 20 firefighters who are retiring from the department.

Several firefighters were also recognized and received the Medal of Valor for rescues made during structure fires, high-angle rescues and building explosions.
