LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — As tens of thousands of race fans fill Churchill Downs this week, it's all hands on deck for the city's first responders.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said Tuesday that police, fire and EMS will be working to keep race fans safe, but first responders need help to make sure the week goes smoothly.

Louisville Metro Police said officers will be working across the city to keep traffic flowing. The warned people to be aware of street closures when planning a route and parking plan. Police reminded people to listen to instructions from officers and look for the LMPD uniform if you need help.

And they also had a warning.

"We want you to have fun," LMPD Assistant Chief Bryan Edelen said Tuesday. "We hope to have fun with you, but you must follow the law. If you choose to be reckless, the consequences will be real. If you street race, we will seize your vehicle."

Louisville Fire and EMS will also be staged around Churchill Downs to respond to any emergencies. There will also be enough staffing to respond to any other issues across the city as well.
