LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville judge set a $500,000 bond for the man accused of driving under the influence and causing a crash that killed a 12-year-old and left two others seriously injured on the Interstate 265 on Labor Day.
Renaldo Gill, 34, was arrested at the scene of the crash. He is facing numerous charges, including murder.
A 12-year-old girl died in the crash, and a woman and a child are suffering from life-threatening injuries after Gill allegedly crashed into the back of their car on Gene Snyder Freeway around 2:30 a.m. Monday, according to Louisville Metro Police spokesperson John Bradley. It happened just south of New Cut Road in the northbound lanes of the Snyder.
Officers said two cars were traveling north when the rear car, a Dodge Durango, ran into the back of the front car, a Jeep Compass. The crash caused the Jeep to overturn and go through the median, into the southbound lanes. The driver of the Jeep, a woman, was ejected and is suffering from life-threatening injuries at UofL Hospital.
Bradley said a baby seat was found under the Jeep with the woman's 4-year-old child inside of it. The child is also suffering from life-threatening injuries at the hospital. The third occupant of the Jeep, the woman's 12-year-old daughter, was ejected and pronounced dead on scene.
Renaldo Gill, 34, was charged with murder and DUI for the crash. The child's mother, Jasmine Simpson, faces charges after police say her children were not properly restrained in the vehicle.
The Durango was eventually found off the roadway near the tree line.
When officers approached Gill, they immediately smelled a strong odor of alcohol and said he had glossy eyes and was unsteady on his feet, according to an arrest citation.
Police said Gill admitted to drinking and had a blood alcohol level nearly double the legal limit. Investigators also said they found marijuana and a gun in his car.
In addition to murder, Gill is charged with wanton endangerment, assault, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, criminal mischief, possession of marijuana and failure to wear a seatbelt. More charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
During Gill's arraignment hearing Tuesday, the judge entered not guilty pleas on his behalf and raised his bond from $250,000 to $500,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 10.
"I find you to be a danger to everyone in this community," Judge Mary Jude Wolford told Gill during the arraignment.
The driver of the Jeep was later identified by LMPD as Jasmine Simpson, who's facing several charges as officers said her children were not properly restrained.
According to an arrest citation, both front seatbelts were locked in the upright position, indicating that neither had been worn during the crash. The baby seat was also not secured properly, as it was thrown from the vehicle during the crash.
Simpson is charged with wanton endangerment, failure to wear seat belts, and seat belt anchor.
LMPD's Traffic Unit is continuing the investigation.
