LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One Louisville neighborhood has dozens of new trees thanks to TreesLouisville.
The nonprofit said the Watterson Park neighborhood currently has 18% tree canopy cover, and its goal is to increase that to 45%. The project started Tuesday on Petersburg Road, near Hikes Lane and Newburg Road.
Volunteers from Premier Packaging helped plant 41 trees, including oaks and sycamores. Organizers said trees can help reduce noise and air pollution.
"Having trees in our neighborhoods where people live, work and play is incredibly important because it has everything to do with the health of the community," said Cindi Sullivan, executive director of TreesLouisville. "Trees will help with allergies, with COPD. They help cool us in the summer."
TreesLouisville was founded in 2015 as a way to address the urban heat island effect.
