LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Algonquin Park's new swimming pool is scheduled to open next month, but the opening date for another pool has been delayed.
For Jerry Harshaw, summer in Louisville’s Algonquin neighborhood is looking bright.
"Sounds great, sounds great — then maybe I can go jump in the pool," Harshaw said with a laugh, a block away from construction crews working on a new public pool set to open in the area.
The long-anticipated facility is scheduled to open May 24, according to city officials. The pool will include slides, lap lanes and a climbing wall.
"[It will] give kids something to do for summer," Harshaw said. "Might give them a way to stay out of trouble."
Across the city in the Camp Taylor neighborhood, however, residents are preparing for a longer wait.
Work on Camp Taylor’s pool has been delayed due to winter weather. The original target date of spring 2025 has now been pushed back. The city said it will open later this summer, but has not yet said when.
"It’s frustrating it wasn’t going to be open at the beginning of summer," said Michael Clemons, who lives across from Camp Taylor Park. “I know a lot of people were looking forward to it for their kids when they get out of school.”
In a statement to WDRB News, Councilwoman Josie Raymond said:
"We're obviously incredibly disappointed that the pool opening has been delayed. There have been challenges with weather and rock, but I am hopeful that the city will find ways to expedite the work. I know they are working with the contractor this week to identify ways to move forward.Â
Families in Camp Taylor and across the city were told they'd be swimming here this summer and they deserve to see that promise kept. I understand their frustration—this will be my family's pool, too.Â
We don't have an exact open date yet, but what we do know if that when it opens it is going to be incredible, offering waterpark-level amenities for just a few bucks entry fee. I can't wait to host a pool party here."
Despite the delay, Clemons believes the final product will be worth the wait.
"I’ve really seen the evolution of this pool," he said. "It just was really an eyesore for the neighborhood... It's going to be a really cool facility when it opens."
Once complete, the new Camp Taylor pool is expected to feature lap lanes, a play structure and a water slide.
