LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The wife of Kentucky U.S Representative Thomas Massie has died.

The 4th District Congressman posted on social media that his wife Rhonda "went to Heaven" on Thursday. The post makes no mention of her cause of death.

"Yesterday my high school sweetheart, the love of my life for over 35 years, the loving mother of our 4 children, the smartest kindest woman I ever knew, my beautiful and wise queen forever, Rhonda went to Heaven. Thank you for your prayers for our family in this difficult time," Massie wrote.

Massie said he and his wife were high school sweethearts. "She was valedictorian at our high school where we went to the Prom together, accepted at MIT and Harvard, earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from MIT, and devoted her life to our family. We spent last week touring Mt Rainier with our grandson - she was the best mammaw ever! We love you Rhonda."

Rep. Massie represents Kentucky's 4th District, which includes Oldham, Spencer, Shelby, Trimble, Nelson, Carroll, Owen and other counties. He was first elected to the seat in 2012.

The Republican Party of Kentucky released a statement that said it is shocked and deeply saddened over the loss of Rhonda Massie.

"Rhonda was an amazing mother, wife, and Kentuckian. She touched all who knew her and will be deeply missed. We ask that you join us in praying for Congressman Massie and his family during this difficult time."

Many fellow politicians offered their sympathy to Rep. Massie and his family.

Sen Robert Stivers, R - Manchester wrote, "Our caucus joins in mourning the loss of a wonderful woman and long-time Kentuckian, Rhonda Massie. We offer our most sincere prayers for comfort and peace to Representative Thomas Massie and his entire family."

Sen. Shelley Funke Frommeyer, R-Alexandria, "Rhonda Massie was an extraordinary woman, wife, mother, and grandmother. Her commitment to Thomas was evident throughout their decades together and in the family they shared. Her legacy lives on in their family and the community she was a large part of. "

We never know when our time here is finished. Everyone whose lives she touched deeply feels her departure from this world, and we share in Thomas’ grief. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the entire family."

Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer, R- Georgetown, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Rhonda Massie. She was a lovely person, known for her warmth and generosity.

Many of us remember the high bids her homemade pies would fetch at Lincoln Day Dinners, a testament to the joy she brought to our communities. Rhonda was a devoted wife and mother and Thomas's intellectual equal. Together, they were a remarkable team, and their partnership was truly inspiring.

My thoughts and prayers are with Thomas and the entire Massie family during this difficult time."
