Man sentenced to life for killing deputy

LEBANON, Ky. (WDRB) -- The man who admitted to killing a Marion County Sheriff's deputy will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Dewayne Shipp received a life sentence Thursday, after pleading guilty to murdering Deputy Anthony Rakes.

Police said Shipp shot 31-year-old Rakes during a traffic stop on U.S. 68 near Lebanon in November 2012. Shipp's car was stopped in the middle of the road and Rakes stopped to assist. According to police, when Rakes approached the car, Shipp shot him with a small caliber handgun.

Rakes was taken to Springview Hospital where he died during surgery.

Police say Shipp took off on foot but was later arrested in Campbellsville by Kentucky State Police and officers from the Campbellsville Police Department.

Rakes' family originally advocated for the death penalty but said they were happy to have the case closed.

"My life will never be the same but maybe I can go on and try to heal for my own," said Rakes' sister Anita Elder.

Despite the closure she has received with sentencing, Rakes' sister said life in prison is better than what their brother was given.

"His family can come visit. He can call his family. And we can't do either," she said. "We just look at his picture or go to his grave."

Rakes was a Marion County native and a 6-year veteran of the Marion County Sheriff's Department, who previously served with the Lebanon Police Department.
