LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — The Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District Board officially approved a 3.9% rate increase Monday for all Jefferson County customers.
MSD first proposed the increase in May, then waited for the required 30-day public comment period before the board could take final action.
The increase represents a $3.23 monthly increase for the average customer. MSD said this will help fund $270 million in critical wastewater, stormwater and flood protection improvements.Â
Oldham County operates on a rate schedule set before MSD took over the county's wastewater services. Its customers will see a 2% increase, raising monthly bills by $1.59.
Both rate increases are set to go into effect Sept. 1.
"MSD does not take rate increases lightly," said Tony Parrott, Louisville MSD Executive Director. "Everything is expensive right now, we get that, affordability is a concern of ours."
This is MSD's lowest rate increase in over 20 years. Last year, the board initially approved a 4.9% increase but later reduced it to 3.9% — the same rate increase approved this year.
