LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A week and a day after the devastating Givaudan plant explosion shook the neighborhood, Clifton residents are still grappling with the aftermath.
Among the residents is Hannah Henshaw, whose nerves remain frayed as she recalls the moment she realized something was terribly wrong.
"I’m really worried about a lot of us," she admitted nervously while pacing outside her home. "I know a lot of us have never really liked that factory being there. I think this is going to show why."
Henshaw and her husband first learned of the explosion through a motion alert from their home security camera.
"I’ve been getting notifications on the app," she said, anxious to check on her four dogs.
The explosion’s force had a profound impact on her home. Pictures were knocked from walls, glass decorations shattered down the stairs, and alarms blared, terrifying her dogs.
"The moment we opened the door, they all bolted," Henshaw recalled. "It took us a little bit to get them back in the house. Since then, I’ve just tried to be here as much as possible."
Despite being back home, the emotional toll remains significant for Henshaw.
"It feels surreal," she said. "The day after, my husband said, 'Yesterday doesn’t feel real at all.' And I agreed. It felt like we went to sleep and woke up in a dream."
The tragedy has sparked deeper conversations between the couple about their future and their community.
"I think it’s opened up some channels we hadn’t talked about before in our marriage, like where we live and things we hadn’t considered," Henshaw said. "It’s not quite a near-death experience, but witnessing something like this makes you reassess things."
Henshaw’s concern extends beyond her own home.
"I’m really worried for my neighbor who was told to shelter in place," she said. "And for everyone in the plant whose lives have been changed forever."
As the community begins to recover, Henshaw and her neighbors are left to face an uncertain future while grappling with the emotional scars of that life-altering day.
