LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's been one month since Norton West Louisville Hospital opened, and while many patients are from the neighborhoods it occupies, some come from around the community for medical care and food assistance.
Regina Mitchell, who grew up in west Louisville, said Thursday she's thrilled to see all the recent development, the new hospital is by far her favorite addition.
"What more can you ask for going to the doctor's office?" Mitchell said.
The $90 million, 90,000-square-foot hospital is located on the Norton Healthcare Goodwill Opportunity Campus at 850 S. 28 St.
"It was more than I imagined," Mitchell said. "Your health is your wealth, and I'm so glad that they're here."
It was a hassle for Mitchell to go to the doctor in the past. However, it now takes her less than five minutes to walk to this hospital.
"I'm just two blocks away," she said. "There's the pharmacy. I got my lab work done here."
According to Norton Healthcare, more than 2,500 patients walked through the hospital's doors for medical care in the first month. Another 261 people also used the hospital's Dare to Care food pantry in that time period. Below are numbers from the first month of operation at the hospital, from Nov. 11 to Dec. 10:

"It makes me feel good. because it's not unknown that west Louisville's been considered a food desert," said Pamela Williams, family member of a patient attending the hospital Thursday.
This pantry is accessible to anyone in need, not just patients. Officials said it's the only hospital in Louisville to offer this service.
"You can't take care of your health if you can't take of yourself socially and economically as well," said Corenza Townsend, chief administrative officer at Norton West Louisville Hospital. "We are here to stay."
This one-stop-shop mentality was central to the building's design and location. It helps cut down the drive to the emergency room and offers access to west-end residents who are without a car.
The hospital also has a community room, bistro and outdoor green spaces. Norton Healthcare President and CEO Russell F. Cox said his staff is still taking feedback on additions the community would like to see at the hospital.
"We're not going to stop listening," Cox said. "We're going to continue our community meetings."
