LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Pet owners in Louisville now have a simpler way to license their furry friends.

Mayor Craig Greenberg and Metro Animal Services announced Monday a new partnership with DocuPet, a leading pet identification and lost pet platform. The program pairs mandatory pet licensing with DocuPet's complimentary HomeSafe 24/7 lost pet service, which helps reunite missing pets with their families quickly and keeps them out of shelters.

"Using a platform like DocuPet is one of the best and quickest ways to ensure your pet is properly licensed, can be reunited with you, and can help free up much-needed space at our animal shelter," Greenberg said in a news release Monday.

Pet owners can purchase licenses online and choose from hundreds of colorful tag designs or even create their own. Each tag carries a unique code that links to the pet's online profile. If a pet goes missing, the finder can use that code to file a Found Pet Report within seconds. Owners can also report their own pets missing, triggering DocuPet's dispatch team to help with reunification.

Metro Animal Services officials said the program has the potential to make a big impact on shelter operations and will help reduce the number of animals in local shelters as well as open space and vital resources for pets that truly need care.
