LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — For families whose child is battling cancer, the hospital can become home for weeks or even months.
Norton Children's Hospital hopes to make that time a little easier with a newly renovated family room designed to give parents, caregivers and young patients a place to rest, recharge and support one another during treatment.
The David & Carol Tinkle Family Room, located inside the hospital's cancer unit, was transformed through more than $435,000 in community donations raised by the Norton Children's Hospital Foundation.
The updated space features a larger kitchen and gathering area, an expanded laundry room, a fitness room for caregivers and a private consultation room where families can meet with members of their child's care team.
"A childhood cancer diagnosis affects the entire family," Dr. Michael Ferguson, chief of Norton Children's Cancer Institute, said in a statement. "Our goal is to care for the whole child, and that means supporting their family as well."
For Jeremy Esposito, the renovation is personal. He and his son, Drew, founded Super Drew's Crew after Drew's cancer journey at Norton Children's.
Esposito said the family room became a place where parents found comfort in one another while spending long days at the hospital.
"Having spaces like this helps bring families together and reminds them they are not alone," he said.
Hospital leaders say the renovated room gives families a welcoming place to step away from treatment, meet practical needs and find support during one of the most difficult times in their lives.
