LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Norton Neuroscience Institute is one of six sites chosen for a new Alzheimer's program.
The new Brain Health Navigator program hopes to create a worldwide model to prevent, diagnose and treat Alzheimer's disease. It includes a dedicated nurse to identify patients at primary care providers who are at high risk and may be experiencing early symptoms of cognitive decline.
The goal is to more quickly connect those patients with treatment and support services.
"Getting out there and taking action before the disease comes (is) a major factor in general in health care," said Dr. Steven Patton with Norton Healthcare. "I think that's the essence of what medicine really is — trying to prevent the disease before it comes."
According to the National Institute on Aging, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's and more than 13 million will be living with the disease by 2060.
