BROWN COUNTY, In. (WDRB) -- Officials say Indiana conservation officers went to Brown County State Park on Saturday evening on a report that a camper had been bitten by a copperhead snake.

According to a release, a man was camping with his family in the Taylor Ridge Campground. The family was heading to the shower house when the man was bitten on the foot by a snake. Authorities say the man was wearing flip flops and that the snake bit him on the toe.

Officials say other campers who were in the area killed the snake. It was identified as a copperhead snake by an Indiana conservation officer.

The man was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital and is in stable condition, according to officials.

Conservation officials say that even though copperhead and timber rattlesnakes are present in Brown County State Park, it's rare that humans are bitten. The snakes are present in southern Indiana. As long as visitors use precautions, many encounters between snakes and humans can be avoided.
