LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — If you're planning to spend the Fourth of July weekend on the Ohio River, officials said what you can't see in the water could be the biggest danger.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is warning boaters to be on the lookout for debris left behind by last weekend's flooding. The agency shared patrol video showing logs, branches and other objects floating in the river that could cause serious crashes or damage boats.

Deputies said even boaters traveling at slower speeds can strike hidden debris, making extra caution essential during one of the busiest weekends of the year on the water.

"There's so many accidents that happen that could be easily preventable," said Col. Steve Healey, chief deputy of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. "This is one of the busiest weekends for law enforcement, EMS, the emergency rooms."

Officials also reminded boaters the same impaired driving laws apply on the water. Operating a boat under the influence can result in a DUI, so deputies encourage anyone planning to drink to choose a sober operator before leaving the dock.

Boaters are also encouraged to wear life jackets, stay alert and watch for floating debris throughout the holiday weekend.
