LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Drivers traveling Interstate 65 and Interstate 264 in Louisville should expect overnight lane and ramp closures starting this week as crews begin traffic work ahead of a major summer interstate shutdown.
Construction starts Tuesday night, with crews widening and restriping ramps along detour routes that will carry traffic when part of I-65 closes later this year. The off ramp from from I-65 North to I-264 East will close at 9 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
A five-mile stretch of I-65 between Jefferson Street and I-264 is expected to close for about two months this summer while crews replace aging bridges. Traffic will be detoured primarily along I-264 and Interstate 64.
To prepare, crews will add lanes at key ramps, adjust pavement markings and install temporary barriers and signage.
“These improvements are necessary investments in Louisville’s main transportation routes,” said Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Several overnight closures are scheduled this month, including ramp closures between I-65 and I-264 and lane closures along I-65 South near West Broadway and East Oak Street.
Drivers are urged to plan ahead, watch for signage and allow extra travel time during overnight work. For the latest project information and updates, click here.
