CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A candidate for Clarksville's Town Council died on election day while campaigning for office.

David Worrall's friends called him "Red."

"Honestly, I never even asked him when he was introduced to me originally. He didn't have a first name. They didn't say this is David. They said, this is Red," said Clarksville Middle School principal Nikki Bullington.

Red was a former Clarksville town councilmember running to get back on council on Election night. He was greeting voters when he collapsed outside a polling location at Renaissance Academy. Worrall, a Republican, had previously served one term for District 3 on Council but was running this year for an at-large spot.

The 59-year-old was owner of Worrall's Automotive and Machine Shop and grew up in the area attending Clarksville High School. He is being remembered for his support of his community and his dedication to local schools.

"Our students benefited from his love of people in general and his connections in the community. And that's something that we're gonna have to work through moving forward," Bullington.

Bullington worked with Worrall often. She said he spent a lot of his time advocating for Clarksville Cares, a community-run program for students who need food, clothes, or school supplies. Worrall also volunteered his time at school functions and events.

"Red was instrumental in raising the amount of money that we needed to support the number of kids we needed," she said. "I think that just fell in line with how he was raised."

Bullington said Worrall was a "happy go lucky guy" that always had a kind word or helping hand extended to others.

"We all should, should take that in and follow his lead as he did in our community and continue to carry on in his memory and do the things that even went down to make this a great place to live and in this building to learn and work," Bullington said.

Funeral plans have not been announced.
