LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville residents who need help paying their utility bills will soon be able to pre-register for a program that can provide relief.

According to a news release from Metro Louisville, pre-registration for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 3, and end on Oct. 31.

Created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, LIHEAP helps qualified low-income residents pay for heating and cooling their homes.

The pre-registration period is solely for Jefferson County residents who are 60 years old or older, or residents who are disabled and receive a fixed income, such as those on Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), pension or Black Lung benefits.

Eligible applicants must provide the following documentation during the pre-registration phase:

  • Proof of all household income for the preceding month. These include any Food Stamp award letters, Social Security Award letters, pay stubs or proof of $0 income. Zero Income forms are available at the Resilience and Community Services office at 701 West Ormsby Avenue, Suite 201, as well as at the six LIHEAP locations listed below. Anyone interested can also obtain the forms by CLICKING HERE.
  • Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
  • The most current heating bill, or a statement from a landlord if heating expenses are included in rent, or a statement from the relevant utility company if the applicant participates in a pre-pay electric program. The account number and name on the account for all heating fuel sources and electric sources must also be included.

Eligible applicants wishing to pre-register must schedule an appointment, either by phone or online. The toll-free phone number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (502) 991-8391.
