LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A city councilman and residents are demanding action after reports of repeated drug use, trespassing, and violence have plagued an apartment complex in Jeffersonville.

People who live at The Meranda on Wall Street in Jeffersonville said the building has had issues for years, but an increase in crime over the past year has some people scared for their lives.

"A lot of us don't come out after dark," said one resident, who wants to remain anonymous. "Everybody is just scared; everybody is terrified for their lives"

The Meranda is an apartment complex housing senior citizens and people with disabilities, but people who live there say security is a problem.

"You're afraid to come out to go get groceries, or you're afraid to come out because you go get robbed, or you're afraid to come out because you don't want to see the wrong drug deal going on in the halls," the resident said.

People who live there said homeless people wander through the building at all times of the night banging on doors. They have also reported drug activity, instances of fights and threats of physical violence.

That is why Jeffersonville City Councilman Evan Stoner is trying to put a stop to the problems.

"I honestly feel like if action is not taken someone is going to be killed in this building," Stoner said.

Stoner tells WDRB Clark County 911 gave him the records of calls in that area, and there have been around 800 911 calls from the complex in the past year. The complex has no on-site security aside from cameras.

"We need security there 24/7," the resident said.

The Monroe Group, a management company based out of Denver, Colorado with more than 90 properties across the country, bought the property in 2022.

"They made a promise to Jeffersonville, they made a promise to this community that things were going to be different when they took control of this building," the resident said.

Now, there's a push for on-site security and more secure doors.

"Why do we have to wait for a tragedy to happen for something to happen to secure this building?" Stoner said.

WDRB reached out to the property managers and front desk but haven't heard back.

Stoner will be holding a public meeting for people to voice their concerns on April 23 at 6 p.m. at the Community Action of Southern Indiana.
