LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A resurfacing and rightsizing project has begun on Brownsboro Road and Mellwood Avenue in Louisville.

The project will reconfigure a block of Mellwood Avenue between Frankfort Avenue and Brownsboro Road from three lanes with one-way eastbound traffic, to two-way traffic, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a news release on Thursday.

On-street parking "along the northern curb line" will stay in place, KYTC said.

Right now, there are four travel lanes on Brownsboro Road between Mellwood Avenue and Chenoweth Lane. KYTC said project will convert the stretch of road, making two travel lanes and add a two-way left-turn lane to "coincide with the existing configuration of" Brownsboro Road between Haldeman and Ewing avenues.

The project also includes other improvements, such as dedicated left-turn lanes at signalized intersections, marked shoulders, a striped median between Jarvis Lane and Mockingbird Valley Road, and a right-turn lane at Mockingbird Valley Road, KYTC said.

The five-lane section of Brownsboro Road and Country Lane will stay the same eastbound, but the far left lane that travels westbound will be reconfigured into left-turn only onto County Lane, and will have one westbound lane continuing and a dedicated right-turn lane onto County Lane.

KYTC said drivers can expect lane closures every day between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the project, which is scheduled to be done by the end of August.

Last year, the city proposed changes to a 3-mile stretch of Brownsboro Road from Mellwood Avenue to Chenoweth Lane. Proposed changes include reconfiguring lanes, turning, parking and crossing distances for pedestrians.

The city hopes the changes will improve safety and decrease the number of crashes in the area. KYTC estimates around 9,000 cars a day travel on Brownsboro Road at Hillcrest Avenue, and 15,700 cars use Brownsboro Road at Chenoweth Lane.
