3rd Street Can Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville's infamous "Can Opener" claimed another victim Tuesday.

During the evening commute, a semitruck got lodged underneath the overpass on 3rd Street near the University of Louisville. The overpass notorious for ripping off the tops of countless semitrucks over the years, earning it the nickname, "The Can Opener."

It has a clearance of 12 feet on one side and 11 feet, 8 inches on the other. Signs were placed to warn drivers about the low clearance.

Two height detection systems with invisible light beams warn drivers of tall vehicles on both sides of the overpass, the state said. Flashing lights and a digital message warn drivers as they approach.

Louisville drivers have posted countless pictures of these "can openers." In fact, there is a Facebook page devoted to it.
