LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana lawmaker is making a new push to legalize medical marijuana.

According to a report by WXIN Fox 59, State Rep. Jim Lucas -- a Republican from Seymour -- plans to introduce a bill in January to legalize marijuana for medical use.

Thirty-three states have legalized medical marijuana.

Many Indiana Republicans oppose the idea, but not Lucas.

"This is a people issue," Lucas said. "There are no labels on this. It doesn't matter if you're black, white, rich, poor, gay, straight, Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative. It doesn't matter."

The legislation would need the signature of Gov. Eric Holcomb, who said last month he's "open to the idea," but only if the Food and Drug Administration and Justice Department give proper approvals, which has yet to happen.
