LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Volunteers laid thousands of wreaths honoring U.S. military veterans at a national cemetery in Louisville on Saturday.

More than 11,000 wreaths were placed at veterans' graves at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery for "Wreaths Across America." It was the first time every veteran's grave at the cemetery received a wreath for the holidays.

As each wreath is placed, the veteran's name was read aloud.

"Just so they're not forgotten, say their names," said Steve Woods, a U.S. military veteran and volunteer. "From what I can tell it's just one of the best causes I've run across. There's an enormous turnout, a lot of people still care, a lot of people still remember so I hope it stays that way."

Organizers said the event would not have been possible without support from the community. More than 2,100 wreaths were purchased between the two Brownsboro Hardware & Paint locations, and the business sponsored another 200 wreaths.

Wreaths Across America started in 2007. In 2023, the organization placed wreaths at more than 4,200 locations in all 50 states.
