LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- For the first time ever, each veteran's grave at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery will have a wreath for the holidays!

The Wreaths Across America campaign places wreaths on veterans' graves at national cemeteries during the holidays every year, including Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.

The cemetery has more than 11,000 graves. Last year, Wreaths Across America delivered nearly 9,000 wreaths to the cemetery.

On Nov. 27, there were still 3,000 wreaths needed to ensure each grave receives a wreath.

Organizers said this would not have happened without the broad support from the community, and specifically, Brownsboro Hardware & Paint.

"We have waited for years to be able to say we are covering every veteran’s grave for the holidays," said Dr. Scott Giltner, location coordinator, and Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. "We are astounded at the phenomenal community support this year and are so gratified by the kindness of others."

More than 2,100 wreaths were purchased between the two Brownsboro Hardware & Paint locations, and the business sponsored another 200 wreaths.

"We had such strong support with people buying one, five, ten, or even 100 wreaths," Doug Carroll, owner of Brownsboro Hardware and Paint, said. "We are blessed to live in such a caring community."

On Dec. 14, volunteers will all gather at the cemetery to help place the wreaths on headstones. As they do so, the veteran's name will be read out loud.

Wreaths Across America started in 2007. In 2023, the organization placed wreaths at more than 4,200 locations in all 50 states.
