6-vote margin leads to recanvass in race for Ky. House Dist. 27

BRANDENBURG, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than a week after the election, some races in Kentucky are still too close to call.

In Meade County, a handful of votes will decide whether a longtime incumbent will keep his seat.

On Thursday, the county Board of Elections will conduct a recanvass to make sure the voting machine totals tabulated on Election Day are correct for the House District 27 race where the margin is just six votes.

The vote totals are recorded on ticker tape, and are being kept under lock-and-key in the county clerk's office until the recanvass.

“We will take each one of those, we will call those numbers out, write them down again, compare the totals that we get tomorrow with what we got on election night,” said Meade Co. Clerk Judy Jordan.

Incumbent six-term Democrat Jeff Greer requested the recanvass after apparently losing to Republican Nancy Tate. Greer said he wants it done not just for himself, but for his supporters.

“Once the recanvass is done, and if no stones are unturned that would lead us to six votes, then I can accept it. I mean, I really can,” Greer told WDRB News.

Tate, the apparent winner, said she is not surprised by the recanvass.

“If I had lost by six, I would do exactly the same thing,” she said.

The Republican, who is running for office for the first time, expects the recanvass to produce same result.

“The day of a the election, there was a lot of diligent effort to make sure the results were calculated correctly, and so I expect there won't be any change,” said Tate.

House District 27, which includes Meade and part of Hardin counties is one of six house races to be recanvassed on Thursday.

The final results will not flip the balance of power in Frankfort, and are not expected to produce any surprises.

“I have not ever seen a change on a recanvass,” said Jordan.

For Greer, the numbers appear to have finally caught up in a district that has been turning red for years.

“I'm proud of my service, and I have nothing to hang my head about,” he said.

The recanvass begins at 9:00 a.m., and should take about an hour.
