LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The three major Democratic candidates for Kentucky Governor will debate on WDRB News ahead of the May 21 primaries.

Attorney General Andy Beshear, Rocky Adkins, the minority floor leader of the state House, and former state auditor Adam Edelen will face off on April 30.

The Democrats are campaigning to unseat current Governor Matt Bevin, a Republican, who is running for his second term with a new running mate, State Senator Ralph Alvarado.

In his campaign announcement, Edelen promised a "modern Kentucky" and an "issues-based campaign." In February, he endorsed a statewide smoking ban, seeking to distinguish himself from the field of candidates. He has also called for an overhaul of the criminal-justice system in the state. He touts his ability to promote a winning political message, as the Democrats seek to stop the party's losing streak.

Beshear announced his candidacy in early January with a push for his Democratic opponents to release their tax returns ahead of the primary in May. In his campaign, he has touted his record of beating Bevin in the courtroom.

Adkins, who has cast himself as the one able to win back Democrats who strayed to support Republicans, has called for free community college and job training for adults. He says his plan would pay dividends for the state by boosting workforce development and economic growth. Beshear said he would propose boosting higher education funding if he wins the election.

In the Republican primary, Gov. Bevin faces state Rep. Robert Goforth, William Woods and Ike Lawrence.

The debate will be moderated by WDRB's Lawrence Smith and Lindsay Allen. Stay with WDRB, more details about the debate will be announced.
