LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Six Kentuckians died due to the winter storm that swept through the commonwealth.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said a woman from Spencer County died from an injury related to the storm, and five men — from Oldham, Franklin, Boone and Breckinridge counties — died due to injuries or medical emergencies.

Beshear said that many, if not most of the deaths, were from cardiac events while shoveling snow.

In total, from two storms that arrived five days apart, 1 foot of snow and a layer of ice coated Louisville.

Beshear is urging people to shovel safely, dress warmly, stay hydrated and move only small amounts of snow and take frequent breaks.

"We want to make sure people are careful when we get more snow and face another one of these," Beshear said. "So taking your time, doing it a little bit different could save your life."

Beshear is also urging Kentuckians to be prepared for more cold weather ahead.
