LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An investigation is underway after a person died while Louisville Solid Waste Management employees were cleaning an alley.
A spokesperson for Louisville Metro Public Works said it happened Thursday just after 9 a.m. in the 2500 block of Cedar Street near 26th Street during a routine alley cleanup.
The spokesperson said alley cleanup regularly happens hundreds of times a day across the city.
Louisville Metro Police Officer Adam Sears said they were notified of a person down in the area of 26th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard.
Police initially said it appeared the woman was having a medical issue, and that LMPD's Homicide Unit was investigating.
Then, on Friday, Louisville police said they were investigating the death of a woman who sustained injuries “from contact with equipment on a garbage truck.”
Because a city vehicle was involved, LMPD's Public Integrity Unit is investigating.
The Public Works employees involved were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure.
Many people in the area told WDRB on Saturday that the woman was homeless and often walked the streets.
The identity of the woman hasn't been released.
