LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Montgomery County woman wanted some ice cream, but instead won $1 million by playing the Kentucky Lottery.
The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, planned to stop for a Dairy Queen Blizzard last week. But first, she stopped at a Mt. Sterling Shell station to buy a $20 Kentucky Jackpot ticket.
She scratched the ticket off in her car, and it revealed a "Win" symbol. That indicated she had won $1 million prize automatically.
"I scratched it from left to right," she said to Kentucky Lottery officials. "I thought, 'well I won my $20 back.' I thought it was $100 at first but then I saw the comma, so there was more. I noticed the smaller zeroes and knew it was a big one."
She went back to the store and asked the clerk if he saw the same thing as her. He scanned the ticket and confirmed her win.
While she never stopped for the ice cream treat, she called her fiancé and they drove to lottery headquarters in Louisville.
"It happened for a reason," her fiancé said. "It’s a blessing."
She told lottery officials she felt lucky.
The lucky winner took the lump sum payment of $680,000 rather than the option of receiving $50,000 per year for 20 years. After taxes, she received a check for $489,600.
The couple will pay medical bills and become debt free.
