LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- YMCA Safe Place Services marked 50 years in Louisville on Thursday.
What was once known as Shelter House has now grown into a nationally-recognized program spanning more than 22,000 Safe Place sites nationwide.
Safe Place Services offers counseling, housing, and mentoring to youth in crisis and their families.
Quan Founder, the Associate Executive Director of YMCA Safe Place Services, said the ultimate goal is family reunification.
"We are trying our best to tackle large issues, all of which cannot be solved, you know, instantaneously," Founder said. "But we are doing our part to chip away from the things that are keeping our community from being the best it can be."
Safe Places are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You'll recognize them by the bright yellow, diamond-shaped signs on and around buildings across the region.
In August, YMCA Safe Place Services launched a 24/7 crisis text line for young people in crisis in Louisville. The new texting option connects youth in crisis with locally-trained volunteers to provide support.
