Men's 1500m Final

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Yared Nuguse, the duPont Manual High School graduate who qualified for his second Olympic Games for Team USA in 2024, overcame being squeezed out by his teammate and eventual winner, Cole Hocker, on the final lap before roaring to the wire late to capture a bronze medal in 1500m final.

Nuguse's late run allowed him to overcome defending Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway for the medal. Great Britain's Josh Kerr took silver.

Nuguse, 25, advanced to the final by winning his semifinal heat after getting boxed in and having to hustle to the front late in his opening heat.

It was a bit of a replay in the final, but Nuguse fought back more than once, closing furiously to take a medal, giving the U.S. a pair of medals in the 1500 for the first time in 112 years.

After the race, NBC's national broadcast showed Nuguse's screaming family in the stands, celebrating his accomplishment.

Nuguse was a state champion at Manual, an NCAA Champion at Notre Dame, a North American mile and 1500-meter record holder, and came into the race as the fourth fastest miler in history, a member of a three-member US team that all made the Olympic final for the first time in 58 years.

Yared Nuguse, a duPont Manual graduate competing for Team USA in the men's 1500 meters in the Paris Olympics, sits down with WDRB's Eric Crawford for a wide-ranging discussion.
