LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some football games for Jefferson County Public Schools are being moved, after a bleacher railing collapse at Waggener High School last week.

That railing has been fixed, but JCPS said it's waiting on a reinspection.

JCPS confirmed to WDRB that it made the decision to relocate three high school football games until a final engineering report and a structural engineer can inspect all of the newly installed bleachers across the district.

An update was sent to JCPS families about Friday's athletic schedule.

  • Moore and Fairdale will now play at Fairdale High School.
  • Waggener and Breckinridge County will now play at Seneca High School.
  • Pleasure Ridge Park and St. X will now play at St. X.

"We understand that schedule changes can be disruptive, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We are committed to prioritizing safety first and will communicate any further updates regarding future events or facility access as soon as the inspections and reports are finalized," the district wrote.

At least six people were hurt when the railing collapsed during a regional soccer semifinal game between St. Xavier and Trinity last Thursday, Oct. 16. Students and players were among those hurt, JCPS said.

Video obtained by WDRB showed the moment the railing collapsed, sending students toppling to the ground.

St. Matthews police said there could be more injuries.

Renovations at Waggener's stadium were just finished last month, including the new bleachers. The upgrades were part of a multimillion-dollar project at several JCPS schools, announced by the district back in 2023.

The district said the bleachers were inspected in September by Louisville Metro Codes and Regulations, and were found to be in compliance.

In a statement the day after the incident, the department said the railings were "constructed to meet the 200-pound lateral load standard mandated by the Kentucky Building Code, and all plans received were stamped by a licensed engineer and approved by our office."
