LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo will stand at Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, when his racing career is over, the farm announced Friday.
No timetable was announced for when Golden Tempo will be retired from racing. The 3-year-old colt is expected to make his next start in the Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga Race Course.
Golden Tempo, trained by Cherie DeVaux, won the Kentucky Derby on May 2, making DeVaux the first woman to train a Derby winner. The colt skipped the Preakness Stakes and has been training at Keeneland.
A homebred for Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stables, Golden Tempo has won three of five career starts and has earned $3,433,000. He broke his maiden at Fair Grounds as a 2-year-old, then won the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes in January before finishing third in both the Grade 2 Risen Star and Grade 2 Louisiana Derby.
In the Derby, Golden Tempo rallied from last in the 18-horse field with a half-mile remaining and surged late to win by a neck.
"We'd like to thank St. Elias Stable and Phipps Stable for entrusting Lane's End with Golden Tempo's stud career," Lane's End's Bill Farish said in the release. "Golden Tempo fits the classic profile that Lane's End has long been associated with."
Golden Tempo is by Curlin, one of the nation's leading sires, and out of Carrumba, a graded-stakes-winning mare by Bernardini. His female family traces through generations of Phipps breeding and includes multiple Grade 1 winners, including champion Heavenly Prize.
No purchase price was disclosed. Stud fees will be announced upon Golden Tempo's retirement.
