LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Churchill Downs Incorporated added three new prep races in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, giving international competitors more chances to reach the Kentucky Derby.
The new races — the UAE 2000 Guineas, Saudi Derby and Dubai Road to the Kentucky Derby Stakes — will now give horses a shot at qualifying for the race next May, according to a news release Tuesday from Churchill Downs Incorporated.
They are part of a 10-race European/Middle East Road to the Kentucky Derby. Horses that earn the most points in those races can receive up to two invitations to run in the Derby at Churchill Downs.
"These additions deepen our international pathway to the Kentucky Derby and extend the Derby brand into two of the sport’s most dynamic markets," CDI CEO Bill Carstanjen said in the release.
The lineup will end with the $1 million UAE Derby in Dubai on March 28, 2026, just a few weeks before the "Run for the Roses."
Racing leaders in Dubai and Saudi Arabia also praised the move. Ali Al Ali, CEO of Dubai Racing Club, said in the release that the change gives horse owners in the region a clear path to the Derby while helping grow the sport worldwide.
