LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thunder Over Louisville is a huge event for the city of Louisville, and Mayor Craig Greenberg is more excited about the upcoming show than anyone!

The event is the official kick-off to the Derby season and brings a substantial financial impact to the city.

Greenberg joined WDRB Mornings on Wednesday during the activities of Thunder week to talk about the event and what excites him most.

"There are very few cities in America that have an event like the Kentucky Derby every year in their city," Greenberg said. "We not only have the Kentucky Derby, but we have Thunder too. Two giant events that are truly unique and bring the community together."

There is something for everyone at Thunder Over Louisville, which is one of Greenberg's favorite things about the event. Whether you like the fireworks, the air show, the food or just people watching in general, you can find something to do at Thunder.

The city works very closely with the KDF organizers, mostly through the first responders, in making sure the event is safe for everyone to enjoy.

"If you see someone in uniform that's helping out and working, please say thank you," Greenberg said. "They're there to make sure everything is safe for you and your family to enjoy and I am so grateful for their work."

Thunder has a big economic impact on the city. Throughout the week, hotels, restaurants, local businesses and vendors will be flooded with business. The event is also a great way to get people back downtown.

"Come downtown, see all the great new things happening, spend some time with your friends and family," Greenberg said. "I'm confident you will find a reason to come back downtown."

You may see Mayor Greenberg out and about on Saturday, as he spends the day traveling around to each popular Thunder spot and giving his thanks to all of the staff, organizers, sponsors, and first responders that make Thunder possible.

"I just love Thunder Over Louisville," Greenberg said. "I grew up here, it's such an exciting event. It helps me remember many of my early days in Thunder and how fun it was. It's going to be a wonderful day."
