LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville business owner was left with nothing but cents after he was hit by scammers who stole thousands of dollars from his account.
Robby Samples has owned Rob's Services for eight years, offering lawncare and landscaping services. But now, he's spending much of his time trying to recover the money he lost to scammers in February.
"That's when I woke up and my account was left with 44 cents," Samples said.
Close to $5,000 was missing.
Samples said he uses the accounting software Intuit QuickBooks to pay employees and accept payments from customers.
"Somehow, someone got into my QuickBooks account and moved my money around in my checking account, and instantly transferred it to their card or their account," he said.
A few weeks before the incident, Samples said there was a suspicious $100 charge on his account to a stocks website. He got anew debit card and the money was refunded, but he wonders if it was related to how scammers accessed his account.
Samples said QuickBooks advised him to change his passwords and use two-factor authentication, which he did, as he continues to call the company about his case.
"I call every day and I'm on hold for three to four hours each day," he said. "Each day, I call back. They say I'll receive an email and there's no way to talk to the dispute side."
Samples also filed a police report with Louisville Metro police, who are looking into the case.
"It shows me the last four digits of either their card number or their account number," he said. "I was hoping that someone ... they would be able to see the whole account number or track it down."
After what happened to him, Samples advises other people to "be careful and watch where you put your info."
"I have no idea how they got into my account or, I don't know, my password, email," he said. "I don't know how they got any of it. I'm trying to figure that out myself."
In a statement, Intuit QuickBooks said they could not comment on specific customer interactions when asked about Samples' case.
"This issue has been escalated with the appropriate third party at the request of Intuit," the statement said. "We take the security and the privacy of our customers seriously. We have information on our security website, that includes tips on how to keep your account secure, what to watch for in terms of phishing attempts and other scams, and how to report a suspicious email."
Samples said he has a message for the scammers who hit his account.
"It stinks that they take money from people who work hard all day, every day," he said.
