LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hundreds of people gathered Saturday at Waterfront Park to help raise awareness and funds for mental health.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness - or NAMI Louisville - held its Step Forward for Mental Health Walk Saturday morning. NAMI Louisville has been helping the community for 44 years.

Attendees could take a 1/2 mile or 2 mile walk.

There were speakers, awards, vendors, games and a silent auction.

Professionals were also on hand offering programs and resources as well as support groups and training. People also got a chance to practice Tai Chi.

"There is such a sigma surrounding it and we have to reduce that stigma and more importantly become advocates where we're standing up and supporting our loved ones - let's face it - we all have someone who is in this mental health journey," Nancy Brooks, event organizer, said.

Funds raised go toward providing free education class and support groups to individuals and family, and provide suicide prevention training, according to a news release.

Statistics show one in five adults suffer from some form of mental illness.
