LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police officers come out on top in the Battle of the Badges blood drive in Clarksville.

Firefighters and police officers staged the friendly competition for a good cause on Monday.

The Battle of the Badges blood drive was held at the Clarksville Community Center. Members of the Clarksville Fire Department and Clarksville Police Department and their supporters donated blood that will be used to save lives.

The donors hope the friendly competition raises awareness for the need to give blood. The police officers and firefighters also had some fun at the event.

"Unfortunately for the fire department, they're on a bit of a losing streak," said Clarksville Chief of Police Nathan Walls. "But I've caught word, they're trying to make a bit of a move this year. Have a lot of hidden donors and they're trying to take it home."

"I'm not going to give away trade secrets, but we're prepared this year," Dennis Johnson, Clarksville Fire Department deputy chief, said. "We're going to win. There's a skew with the police department somehow, but we're going to get it this year."

The police department had an edge, with 32 donors while the fire department had 29.

So far the police department is undefeated in the Battle of the Badges.

Officials said tables were full from open to close so the real winners are those who will be getting the gifts of love.

All the donors received free t-shirts from the police department.

Donors of all blood types are still needed. To learn more about donating blood with the American Red Cross, click here.
