LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- On this Memorial Day, the nation honors the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country.
Remembrance ceremonies were held across Louisville Monday. At Zachary Taylor National Cemetery on Brownsboro Road, 11,000 American flags were placed at the graves of those who served.
Some of those who were out at the cemetery placing flags and visiting didn't have any loved ones buried there, but wanted to pay their respects.
"This has been something that I have done for a lot of years, once I discovered it was here," said Jason Dierking, who was visiting the cemetery Monday afternoon. "It's just an amazing opportunity to see so many people that have served and have died for our country."
The cemetery also lays wreaths at the graves each year around the holidays.
In Shively, the community came together for a Memorial Day event to honor our local fallen heroes.
The ceremony was held Monday morning at the American Legion Post 220 on Dixie Highway.
American flags were placed at every grave. Several local leaders, including Rep. Morgan McGarvey, spoke in remembrance of the soldiers buried here.
"Our freedom was paid for and is still provided by the blood and the sacrifice of our veterans," McGarvey said. "By every single man and woman who has been willing to put on a uniform, to wear that flag on their shoulder, and know that it is more than just a place, it is that idea of freedom, of equality, of striving for that more perfect union that gives them the courage to sign up and even lay down their life."
