LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A weekend lane closure on the Sherman Minton Bridge is happening a few days earlier than expected.

With rain anticipated this Friday, the Interstate 64 westbound lane on the top deck of the bridge will close Wednesday at 7 p.m. and won't reopen until 11 a.m. Thursday.

During the closure, the Exit 123 ramp to New Albany will not be accessible, but traffic will still be able to use I-64 West by using the left lane approaching the Interstate 264 interchange.

The lane will not be closed this weekend as originally scheduled.

The weekend of March 15, all westbound lanes to Indiana will close for three days around 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday, March 18. The directional closure will also close the I-64 West exit ramp to Spring Street, as well as the I-264 West to I-64 West ramp.

More lane closures are expected March 22-28:

  • Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23
  • Thursday, March 28 at 8 p.m. until 9 a.m. Friday, March 29

Delays are expected and motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during the closures.

The closures will allow crews to pour new concrete on the upper deck of the bridge.

The work is part of the ongoing Sherman Minton Renewal Project, which is aimed at painting and rehabilitating the 61-year-old bridge. The project is anticipated to give the six-lane, double-decked bridge up to 30 more years of life.

Construction on the bridge is a multi-phase project.
