NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- One person was injured and several apartments were destroyed in a fire Monday afternoon in New Albany.

The fire happened in a building at State and Clay streets.

New Albany Fire Deputy Chief Tim Kron said three apartments were destroyed in the building, but the Cake  Ladies Dream Shoppe bakery on the first level was saved.

Kron said firefighters had to rescue a woman, who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Other residents were able to get out safely.

A neighbor who called 911 said the recycling bin caught on fire, and the flames went up fast.

"I couldn't pull it out from the building in time so I ran around front, got everybody out front and then we had to try and get everybody down," said Brandi Hamm, who lives nearby. "Everybody got down except for a couple people that got stuck up there and had to jump from the patio."

Kron said it took 15 firefighters 30 minutes to get the fire under control. The official cause of the fire is under investigation.
