LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A graduation ceremony Thursday morning celebrated the work of 15 people who completed the Urban Workforce Development Initiative after helping build the new Norton West Louisville Hospital.
The program, developed by the hospital's general contractor, Harmon/Messer Construction Co., helps people facing employment challenges earn careers in the construction field. The graduates got the opportunity to train while helping build the new hospital at 28th Street and West Broadway in the Parkland neighborhood.
"It makes me want to get up every morning and go to work," said Yaldale McGinnis, one of Thursday's graduates. "Everybody I work with, I'm super thankful for those guys I've built bonds with at the Norton West job. Definitely, I could see myself doing this long-term."
Norton Healthcare said in a news release Thursday that the program is designed to invest in the development of "underserved or underprivileged residents in the urban core" who struggle to find employment.
“We create a pipeline directly from West Louisville into these career opportunities that provide benefits — health, dental, vision — in addition to paychecks,” Stanley Warrenhuffman, economic inclusion manager for Messer Construction, said in a news release. "... Our goal is to find individuals who want to show up every day on time, and they’re committed to that, and to give them an opportunity to show that, and earn their way into the trades."
The hospital is scheduled to open Nov. 11. It will include a 24/7 emergency department, operating rooms and 20 inpatient beds to start. It will also have primary care doctors, outpatient, specialty services, a retail pharmacy and imaging including X-ray, CT and MRI.
Outpatient offices will include adult and pediatric care along with women's services including obstetrics and gynecology. There will also be cardiology, orthopedics, diabetes care and behavioral health services.
And in addition to the medical resources coming soon, the campus already provides social services with community partners to help people with finances, employment and more.
