LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two Central Hardin High School students are dead and two other juveniles were injured after a single-vehicle crash in Hardin County early Saturday morning.
The Hardin County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 3700 block of St. John Road just before 2:30 a.m.
Police said a vehicle driven by a juvenile from Eastview, Kentucky, was headed east when the driver lost control.
The vehicle left the roadway on the left shoulder and rolled multiple times. The driver was ejected and sustained life-threatening injuries.
The victim was taken to Baptist Health Hardin then airlifted to UofL Hospital in critical condition.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, 17-year-old Gerald Lyons succumbed to his injuries Saturday evening.
Police said a teen in the front-seat was also ejected and died at the scene. The victim was identified Sunday as Tristen Shrouder.
Two other juvenile passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Baptist Health Hardin.
At the scene, a small memorial marks the spot of what police said was a rollover crash.
John Wright, community relations specialist with Hardin County Schools, said the school district doesn't know the other two juveniles injured in the crash.
"We're not 100% sure on the identity of the other two, since they weren't badly hurt," Wright said.
Wright said the school has been in contact with family members.
Hardin County Schools are on spring break this week. But counselors will be there for students and staff who want to talk.
"You don't have to come in and talk with a counselor, you can come in and just be with each other," Wright said. "We're going to have this room that will be open."
Counselors will be on campus at the school from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Hardin County Schools issued the following statement:
"We have learned that two Central Hardin High School juniors, Tristen Shrouder and Gerald Lyons, have passed away as the result of an automobile accident.
They both had the promise of bright futures and both were incredible young men. We all share in the pain and the sense of tragic loss that these families have. Losing anyone is horrific but the loss of two young lives cuts us to our core.
I ask the entire Hardin County Schools family and our community to keep Tristen’s family and Gerald’s family in your thoughts and in your hearts. These losses come at a time when our students and staff are away from school because of spring break.
As CHHS Principal Tim Isaacs has shared with students in a message he sent this afternoon, our district’s crisis response team will have counselors available for our students and staff in the Central Hardin library media center on Monday, March 31st, from 10 am until noon. There is also a list of professional counseling services available on the CHHS website under the Resources tab. That website is https://chhs.hardin.kyschools.us/
The HCS family is strong! I encourage us all to surround CHHS, the families of these young men and their friends with sympathy, compassion and understanding."
