LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A German game that dates back centuries is returning to the streets of Louisville's Schnitzelburg neighborhood Monday evening.
The 54th annual World Championship Dainty Contest is held on the last Monday in July each year on George Hauck Way, near Goss Avenue.
Contestants -- who must be 45 years or older -- use a broomstick to try to hit a five-inch peg called a dainty as far as possible.Â
The competition begins at 5 p.m. and will feature a food court, beer garden, and family area.
Last year, hundreds of people gathered to watch 242 contestants compete to become 2023 World Dainty Champion. Eric Allen came out on top with after hitting the dainty a distance of 149 feet. That was just four feet short of the world record distance of 153 feet set by David Bramblette in 2020.Â
The Dainty Contest started in 1971 when George Hauck, Charlie Vettiner and others gathered at the corner of Goss and Hoertz Avenue to play the German street game.
