LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in a crash that killed a 6-year-old and injured several others, including a 2-year-old, Tuesday night in Austin, Indiana.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Carey Huls said officers from the Austin Police Department and deputies from the Scott County Sheriff's Office responded to a two-car crash at 8:42 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 256 and U.S. 31.

Investigators said a Toyota Camry was headed west on S.R. 256 and entered the intersection on a green light to turn south on U.S. 31. As the vehicle turned, a Chrysler 300 that was headed north on U.S. 31 "disregarded a red light" and entered the intersection without stopping, Huls said, colliding with the Toyota.

Huls said the driver and a passenger of the Toyota were transported to UofL Hospital, where they are expected to survive their injuries.

The woman driving the Chrysler was transported to Norton Scott Hospital in Scottsburg with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. A front passenger of that vehicle was also taken to UofL Hospital and is expected to survive.

A 2-year-old in the back seat of the Chrysler was taken to Norton Scott Hospital and is expected to survive their injuries. However, a 6-year-old who was also in the back seat of the Chrysler was taken to Norton Scott Hospital, where she later died.

ISP's Crash Reconstruction Team was requested and has taken over the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Huls said part of the investigation includes determining whether the 6-year-old child was secured in the vehicle properly. The Indiana Department of Child Services is conducting their own investigation.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Huls said toxicology results are pending.

No additional information was immediately available.
