LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new Indian and Nepali restaurant will open soon on Bardstown Road in the former site of a controversial business.
Hurry for Curry had a soft opening Sept. 1 at 1582 Bardstown Road in Louisville's Deer Park neighborhood, our partners at Louisville Business First reported this week.
The building at Bardstown Road and Bonnycastle Avenue once housed Café 360, but it's been vacant since a deadly shooting inside the business last year. Earlier this year, the Department of Codes and Regulations listed several issues with the building, including broken windows and doors, hazardous makeshift electrical wiring, and a collapsing awning. The open windows had neighbors worried the vacant building may be sheltering squatters.
Owner Saraswati Adhikari said they're hoping to hold a grand opening in October. Born in Nepal before moving to Louisville, Adhikari recently graduated from Berea College and is opening Hurry for Curry with her boyfriend, Dilli Baskota. The couple initially planned to open the restaurant in Berea but pivoted to Louisville when they heard about the vacant building on a prominent stretch of Bardstown Road.
"We kind of got a sneak peek from the window," Adhikari told Business First. "We're like, 'Oh, it looks like a ready-to-go restaurant.' Plus, it's in the Highlands, and people walk by here every single day — a lot of them."
Adhikari and Baskota said they invested about $70,000 into the business to open it and are working hard on a traditional menu with Indian and Nepali cuisine as well as Tibetan dishes.
