LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Many gas stations are raising the amount that they put on your credit or debit card, which can be a shock if your checking account is low.
A woman pulled into her local gas station to fill her car up. With a tight bank account, she only put $10 of gas in.
What really shocked her is the hold of almost $50, draining her checking account down to fumes.
A sign inside the convenience store said debit cards will be subject to a 48-72 hour hold.
There was no sign on the gas pump either.
It's know as a "pre-authorization hold," and it's perfectly legal. Many gas station do it these days to make sure you have enough money on your debit card to pay for your fill-up.
The hold at some stations is now as high as $125.
To avoid it? Pay with cash, or pre-pay inside.
