LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Sheriff's departments everywhere are warning about a surge in threatening scam calls this holiday season.

If you receive a call, it's important to take immediate action.

Scammers are posing as sheriff's deputies, claiming you may have missed a court appearance and are not in contempt of the courts.

One woman received a call like this, and when she called back, her world came to a halt.

They knew her social security number, what she did for work, her address, and her birthday.

The scammer claimed they had a warrant out for her arrest and a bond of $15,000. They wanted her to drive to her bank immediately, withdraw the money, and deposit it all into an ATM, all while staying on the phone so they could hear the conversation.

Not sure if a call is real? Call your local sheriff's department and not the number that called you.
